National Watermelon Queen Program

Twenty-two-year-old Olivia Johnson, daughter of Shelby and Renee Johnson, of Center, TX, was crowned the 2023 National Watermelon Queen during our 108th annual National Watermelon Association's convention in February, which was held in Asheville, NC.
Olivia is the daughter of a 6th generation farmer and has spent her entire life in the watermelon industry. She has won her counties biggest watermelon competition 8 times, served as the 2018 East Texas Watermelon Queen and the 2022 Texas Watermelon Queen.
Olivia will travel throughout the United States and possibly foreign markets promoting the Watermelon industry making guest appearances. She will give tips on the selection of watermelon in addition to the nutritional and economic value of the product. She may be sponsored anywhere watermelon is featured.


Queen Tour

The National Watermelon Queen Tour is part of the overall promotional effort of the National Watermelon Association to increase sales.
The National Watermelon Queen is selected annually. The competition takes place in conjunction with the annual National Watermelon Association’s convention.

She spends the year traveling to cities all over the nation, and often into Canada, talking to people in supermarkets, at fairs and festivals, telling everyone about the nutritional benefits, and economical values of watermelon. 
The Queen is available for media appearances, in store promotions, fairs, festivals or functions where watermelon is featured.

Olivia is attending Texas A&M University.
She is majoring in Nutrition, with a current 3.5 GPA.


Olivia's hobbies include traveling, attending concerts, hunting and fishing. Her favorite way to spend her free time is with her family playing games on the riverbank or playing with her dog, Maylee.


Olivia is the recipient of the Texas A&M Regents Scholarship, Ken Martin Memorial 2022 Viva Fresh Scholarship, The Bone Hill Foundation Scholarship, Roughrider Foundation Scholarship in honor of Gene Borders, Stanley Burgay Memorial Scholarship, GO Texan Scholarship and ETA RHO Scholarship.



After graduating from Texas A&M Univeristy, Olivia hopes to keep her family tradition alive by working in the watermelon industry. She has fallen in love with promoting our favorite food and hopes to continue being an advocate for watermelon for the rest of her life.
