D.H. Gilbert, a seed grower from Monticello Florida, was one of the first members of the executive committee.   

At the start of the association Gilbert had been in the seed business for about 16 years. Along with growing watermelon, he also shipped them. 

Mr. Gilbert  prided himself in being “the only man in America who devotes his whole time to the exclusive growing of watermelon.”
