Agricultural labor reform made a significant step forward at this year’s Washington Conference with the release of the Securing Agriculture Workforce Act of 2026, new legislation from House Agriculture Committee Chairman Glenn “GT” Thompson.Built on recommendations from the bipartisan House Agriculture Labor Working Group, the proposal addresses many of the priorities specialty crop agriculture has championed for years, including expanding access to legal agricultural labor, improving program efficiency, controlling costs, and creating a more workable system for growers. The NWA has been engaged throughout the process and has signed on in support of the legislation. We believe this proposal represents one of the most significant opportunities in years to advance meaningful agricultural labor reform and improve workforce stability for watermelon growers and the broader specialty crop industry. Currently, lawmakers are seeking support. Chairman Thompson’s office is seeking original cosponsors and industry endorsements before the June 29 deadline. We encourage watermelon growers, shippers, and industry partners to make their voices heard and help demonstrate broad support for the legislation.
